One million kilowatt Suwalong hydropower station in Tibet is expected to generate electricity by the end of next year

Changdu, Tibet Autonomous Region, is located at the junction of the four provinces of Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan and Qinghai, lies in the Hengduan Mountains where Jinsha River, Lancang River and Nu River run through. With the continued accelerated development and construction of hydropower in Changdu City in recent year, Changdu has maintained Guoduo, Jueba, and Wato power stations under normal production and power generation, and Suwalong, Yebatan, Batang and Rawa power stations under construction.

Located in the upper reaches of the Jinsha River at the junction of Mangkang County, Changdu City and Batang County, Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan, Suwalong Hydropower Station has the total installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts and attracted the total investment of 17.89 billion yuan.

1.6 billion yuan is expected to be invested in Suwalong Power Station, according to 2020 project construction plan, and as of the end of August, 703,161,700 yuan (43.95% of the annual investment plan) has been invested, with the total investment since project commencement of 857,467,100 yuan.

It is planned to construct 8 hydropower stations in the Sichuan-Tibet section of the Jinsha River, including Gangtuo, Yanbi, Boluo, Yebatan, Rawa, Batang, Suwalong, and Changbo. Suwalong Hydropower Station is the 10th level of the 13-level cascade plan on the upper reaches of Jinsha River. On November 21, 2017, the power station successfully completed river closure. It was the first project approved for construction for the Jinshang cascade power station and the first large-scale hydropower project over one million kilowatts in the Tibet Autonomous Region, and the main work construction has commenced.

It is known that Suwalong Hydropower Station, a daily regulating power station, has the normal water storage level of 2,475 meters and the corresponding storage capacity of 638 million cubic meters. The total installed capacity, mean annual energy production and annual utilization hours are 1.2 million kilowatts,.426 billion kWh and 4522 hours, respectively. The first unit is planned to generate power by the end of 2021.

During construction of the Suwalong Hydropower Station, great attention was paid to the ecological and environmental protection. During construction, we rationally optimized the layout of construction site and the alignment of construction road, avoid causing compression and damage to ancient trees as much as possible by enclosing and identifying 5 large walnut trees within the project area and transplanting 8 old trees in the reservoir area. Cuttage was also utilized to protect huge trees in other project-affected areas, and preserved excellent tree species by cultivating a total of more than 110 walnut seedlings.
