On October 19, Impoundment Acceptance Conference of Lianghekou Hydropower Station, the world’s third highest dam, was held in Chengdu. The Impoundment Acceptance Committee agreed to, at proper timing, close the gate and realize the first-stage impoundment by blocking the No. 1 and No. 2 diversion tunnels of Lianghekou Hydropower Station in November 2020.
Entrusted by the Sichuan Province Resource Administration and according to the relevant regulations and requirements of the National Energy Administration, the General Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Planning and Design, together with relevant units and departments, set up the Impound Acceptance Committee for the Yalong River Lianghekou Hydropower Station. The committee listened to the report on the construction status, design status, quality supervision in impound stage, impound safety appraisal, main conclusions of acceptance check of land acquisition and resettlement during impound stage, discussed the acceptance conditions, and studied and resolved existing problems.
The acceptance committee believes that the Lianghekou Hydropower Station on the Yalong River was constructed in accordance with the relevant national laws, regulations and approval documents, the engineering design meets the requirements of national and industry regulations; the hub construction meets the requirements for closing the gates of two initial diversion tunnels in November 2020; the completed civil engineering, the manufacturing and installation quality of metal structure equipment meet the relevant regulations and design requirements, and the main construction defects have been properly treated according to the design requirements; the land acquisition and resettlement in the impound stage has passed the special acceptance and the conclusion has been agreed. In addition the impound planning scheme (including discharged volume downstream) and the 2021 flood control plan and the emergency plan for gate-closing impound are feasible.
In order to ensure the acceptance of impound project, from August 18 to September 24, we have successively passed the following 6 acceptances: water and soil conservation facilities in the impound stage, provincial acceptance of resettlement, independent acceptance of environmental protection, impound safety appraisal in the first stage, impound quality supervision in the first stage (16 times in total) and independent acceptance of archives. All the inspection results meet the requirements of impound acceptance conditions and have successfully passed the specific acceptance checks, laying a solid basis for the successful acceptance of the first-stage impound acceptance of Lianghekou Hydropower Station.

Lianghekou Hydropower Station is the largest hydropower station among the seven cascade power stations planned for construction in the middle reaches of the Yalong River. It is currently the third tallest dam in the world that has been built or is under construction, and the largest hydropower project in Tibet in China. The reservoir supports over year regulation since it has the normal pool level of 2,865 meters, total storage 10.767 billion cubic meters and the regulated storage capacity 6.56 billion cubic meters. The hydropower station has an installed capacity of 3000 MW, and the mean annual energy production up to 11 billion kwh.
As indicated by the construction plan, impounding can be generally divided into three stages. In the first phase, in November 2020, the gate 1 and 2 diversion tunnels are closed, and the reservoir is filled to the No. 5 diversion tunnel for discharging. In the second stage, June 2021, No. 5 diversion tunnel will control the discharge and raise water level to the No. 3 and No. 4 diversion tunnels until overflow, the gate then will be closed and the discharge is controlled by the No. 3 and No. 4 diversion tunnels, with reservoir storage up to dead water level of 2,785 meters. In the third stage,November 2021, No. 3 diversion tunnel is closed, and the emptying tunnel (No. 4 diversion tunnel), deep hole spillway and tunnel-type spillway will be jointly controlled for discharge. According to the upstream water supply, the reservoir will gradually store water to normal level of 2,865 meters.
The installed capacity of Lianghekou Hydropower Station is 3,000 MW (6×500MW), and the bearing temperature sensors (Pt100) of each part of the 6 generator sets are provided by Testeck Technology.
